Welcome to Letters & Science Academic Advising

(upbeat music) – They were so warm and welcoming. – They were invested in
my success as a student. – Definitely used Cheadle Hall’s advisors religiously, almost. – If I had any questions
about my degree requirements, all the things that I
found really confusing, I would just pop into the
advising office and ask them. – The advising office is typically a good place to start. – You know, we’re real people that are there to help. – Students may be a little bit intimidated to come into the office. They think it’s like a principal’s
office from high school but it’s nothing like that. (upbeat music) – It’s about helping students connect with what they need. – What we do is we try
to help students navigate where to find answers. – We want students to come in, actually, just, we
wanna know who they are. – We basically help you figure out not just how to graduate, but how to take advantage
of all the resources UCSB has to offer. (upbeat music) – Don’t rely on your
friends for information even though they might
be trying to help you. Just double check with us and then you know for sure the information you’re getting is correct. – They don’t get annoyed
if they see your face 24/7. You know, they want you to come in, you know, and ask all
the questions you want. – Can’t I fit this minor in? Can I take these classes over the summer? – The advisor’s responsible to help them navigate this institution. – So that not only you’re successful in your academics here, but you’re also looking into internships, research opportunities, or
anything that’s going to prepare you for life after UCSB. (upbeat music) – Our job is not to tell
students what to do. – What we’re going to do is empower the student to
make informed decisions. – We’re not gonna tell
you what to major in. We’re not gonna tell you to drop a class. We’re just there to try to help you figure out what you want and then help you figure out which decision will get you closest. (upbeat music) – It’s really important that students come to our office as soon as possible so that they have all the
options available to them. If they wait too late, they might only have one left. – I wouldn’t have failed
as many courses if I had just sat down with
somebody and talked through the things that I really
enjoyed about my major and the things that I didn’t like. – When students come in as a freshman we can talk to them about what their interests are and give them more options to explore. – There is an ally waiting for you in the advising office. They’re gonna be one of
your fiercest champions. – We are here to advocate for you because we really want you to get the most out of your time here at UCSB. – I would say, don’t be
afraid to go to advising for any and all questions that you have because they’re extremely helpful and no question is a dumb question.
