Reconciliation Letters

Reconciliation Letters

The campaign is called Letters for the Reconciliation We were in the streets, schools and universities Looking for people who wanted to send a message to you (FARC Ex-combatants) Because we believe that peace does not only come from you, or the government but rather society as a whole Receiving this letter, now that we have a peace process The media has portrayed us like the demons That we are the worst, but we are not We are people who want change, but with social justice Where all of us are welcome And we are grateful to you, the students For being interested in this (peace) process We want to work side by side with the communities We want to build, we want to develop ourselves Reenter civil society To live together and share I consider this is one of the most beautiful experiences But also more impactful that a Colombian can have Why? Because you get to discover the other side of war You get to know the FARC-EP How are they organized, who are their members But most of all which are their life stories As we, civil society have a beautiful, difficult life story They (FARC members) also have their own story to tell It is very important that lots of Colombians can come to the FARC encampments To connect with the FARC and see them as social beings who can transform the world Unfortunately, this is a privilege that only a couple have And here is the big challenge for us To tell all the citizens how they live, who they are Which are their dreams and what they want to achieve in this post-peace agreement stage It is very important to highlight gender equality here It is something really beautiful one can see in these FARC encampments Because from the outside the perspective is completely different When you arrive here you discover a reality, a world that allows you to see that women are important in society It would be cool, that people start to talk to you the ones who really want it To see that you are not the image that has always been sold to the Colombian people I want to send a message to everyone who wrote these beautiful letters Welcoming all the guerrilla members These kinds of actions are necessary and very valuable Because the FARC members will feel welcome And they will not have the fear that one normally has of going out to the cities That everyone is going to reject them We know that that is not the case but there are a lot of people who are afraid This helps a lot to raise our spirit An ex-combatant, Xiomara, was telling us that failures from the central government Where there is no education, where healthcare is scarce where there are a lot of social problems Where there are several health and economic problems Then their only option, their only support was found in the guerrilla, in the FARC I think, when one reflects upon it one can say that the conflict has it roots in a different place And it is not felony or the impulse to commit crimes or eliminate the other I believe (that the visit to the FARC encampments) radically changed my perspective I was raised in an environment where I was told that the FARC were the worst in the country If there was an explosion or a kidnap it was the fault of the FARC They are people like us, that perhaps did not have such a good past But I, as an individual, I am forgiving them And simply, if one day I find one of the people I interacted here with on the streets I can easily invite them a cup of coffee and tell them to talk To find solutions to problems and make Colombia a better country for everyone
