We talked about developers’ different opinions about “Story importance”. The story is something to see while the game’s loading! You kidding? I play the game for the story. Of course, you’ve heard of the famous production triangle! Right? If not, no problem, because I didn’t know about it before this book. Simply, it is a concept allowing you to choose 2 of 3 things: money, time, and quality. That’s not our concern, what’s important is, Weirdness triangle, that contains the world, characters, and activities. You can make only 1 thing super weird! If used on more than 1, it’ll destroy the game! While writing the story, you’ll notice 3 types of players: 1. So concerned about the story as it’s showing. Hmm. Good story. Fine, time to play! 2. Concerned ‘more than needed’ about finding new aspecties and diving deep. ‘aspecties’ ‘aspecties’ ‘aspecties’ Aspecties? What is it? Depths? WHAT? WOW!!!! WOWOWOW!! Fine.. fine. Why do they make a story anyway? “Story maker” “Story maker” “Player” “Story maker” You have to differentiate, Suspense and surprise. “Suspense” Times like this, the player’s like: Don’t DIE! I’ll give you an example, there’s a game we really love, which is Red Ball 4; it is one of the most amusing games, we still play; because it relates to a story. Look how beautiful its story is! That makes the red ball go and save everyone! Look at how it ends. That’s the idea from starting the story and ending it. In the past, the story ending was a black screen with “You’re dead” written on it, With time passage, unfortunately, the concept of an ending was developed. To satisfy the player’s greed for more. So the best solution is… end the game when you feel that you satisfied the player. How long is the game? In old times, it was 20 hours, and in the old old old times, it was 40 hours. But, now it’s ranged 8 – 10 hours. Then you finish the whole game, however, you don’t have to go with this rule; it doesn’t work well with all games genres. Just with long games such as adventure and these things. I like to be so clear! Right! We forgot to tell you about something really important, which is the game’s title. Learn from us, Qawqa’a, Sharnaqa, Hazlaqa, Mealaqa (Spoon). Just kidding! I just mean, clear titles. Simply, when you hear Qawqa’a, you know that it is a magical mother turtle saving her daughter. JK Just that, the title should be clear and remind the player of what the game’s about. This has types too! 1. Letterly title: Taken from the player’s, world’s or activity’s name. 2. Action title: Showing the game’s spirit. Showing the game’s spirit? What does that mean? Has some drama and so, related to the game’s nature. 3. Punny title: Makes you admire how genius, such as Half Life & Just Cause. 4. Purple Cow title: Makes you unable to understand anything, teasing you to open the game and play it. Such as Far Cry & Little Big Planet. Little. Big. Planet? Titles are preferred to be short, clear and descriptive. Easier to remember and create a game logo. When you find your amazing name and you’re happy with it, you find that someone else has already used it! Therefore, make a simple Google search. After finding the game’s title, We now have to find characters with names. You have to make the player love the character, and make its death matter. Just so….? Of course, some of you remember, nights of crying over a character’s death in a movie, game or anything. You should the player have this feeling to your character. Just like, when Shuichi Akai died! For me, it is Newt, He has a weird name, but I felt so bad for him. Writing a story for kids games are different from a normal game. Ask experienced people like us! That doesn’t mean to make the story as ridiculous as possible, Just because “They are kIDs” “They are stupid, who cares about them?” Kids are NOT stupid. Smarter than you think! *Whisper* Look who’s talking! We are so old! Right! Kids are SMARTER than you think. But I’m just a naive kid! Writing licensed stories, when you want to use something that’s already created from a movie or something known, you have to get a license from the creator of the thing you want to use. He has to agree, and under his rules, staying with you until he is satisfied. Sorry. Like this, we finished this level, We know everything about the story.
