Hello everyone My name is Dyah Prajnandhari I’m currently in my 6th semester studying in English Letters at Sanata Dharma University I have quite an experience of interpreting I have become a liaison officer for 3 times two times for ACICIS DSPP Program and once for ACICIS DSIP Program There were a lot of times that we came to the field trip that I became a translator between my buddy and the locals that couldn’t speak any English The reason why I want to join this program is because I want to help my friends from Indiana University to understand the topics of women’s empowerment, gender equality, health, and education in Indonesia and also I want to broaden my knowledge about these topics. If we talk about the topic of gender equality then the topics of health, education, and women’s empowerment are somehow related In this video, I want to talk about women’s empowerment In Indonesia, a preliminary ideology that springs to our mind is the role of women have in Indonesia’s traditionally influenced society A woman is seen as an entity to serve her man or if she is married, then she has to be at home, doing domestic chores A woman is expected to be obedient too, as if she has no voice. Women’s empowerment is important because women cannot be dependent on her man. Women should be allowed to have easily accessible higher education so that they can be independent in many aspect especially financial aspect. This ideal is significant to me because I ever experienced this in my family in 1998. In 1998, Indonesia had an economic failure because of the fall of President Suharto. My dad was fired from his position and my parents were left unemployed. In 2001, we moved to Yogyakarta and my mom was offered a position in a company My dad allowed her to have that position This gave our family not only a better financially position but also a stable future Moreover, it inspired my interest in female’s empowerment and gender equality. So sharing the burden between husband and wife could make the life of the parents and the children better. When women have the access of being financially independent they could achieve many other things such as voicing their own voices. When we come to the point where women are allowed to have their own voices there are lot of articles in internet that represent women voices. According to a research by Lundby in 2008 titled “Introduction: Digital Storytelling and Mediatized Stories the internet became a place to communicate and make people become storytellers on their own. This activity which is called digital storytelling has one aspect associated with women which is the portrayal of their own real life stories. One of the example is Magdalene.co Magdalene.co is a website that creates safe place for women to speak their opinions about any issues related to women. This is an example of women’s empowerment too as the founders who is also women are creating safe place for women to speak their opinions without getting judged. With this platform, women’s opinions can be said without being silenced by male dominated society. The issue of gender equality in Indonesia will still be a problem but more people are aware about it, especially women. I believe we still have a long journey to reach that gender equality. Thank you.
