How to get your child to use cursive.

– Hi, there. Are you the parent of a
student that just finished second or third grade and
perhaps they got an introduction to cursive handwriting? Maybe they didn’t get an introduction, maybe they had a full fledged couple of months on cursive handwriting. One of the questions that always
comes up in my training is: Nicole, they had cursive
last year and this year when they’re coming to school,
they don’t wanna do it. What should I do? And I’m gonna share my
answer with you guys. What happens is when
children are taught cursive, which a lot of them
still are taught cursive. Now, a lot of them are taught cursive. Now, I don’t think a lot of
them are actually using cursive. And here’s why. The kids usually have been
writing from kinder, first, second so a good three years. And then they get a quick, maybe six week introduction in cursive. And usually that introduction
includes going through a workbook, it includes some instruction, and then come summer time
and then do we know how much practice they get with cursive? None, probably none. I’m sure there’s some of you out there that get some practice. So, what happens is they
come in the next school year and let’s say I’m the third grade teacher, I know in Mrs. Smith’s class
she introduced cursive. So, now I’m wandering well why don’t they wanna write cursive? And then they just end
up going back to print. Well, here’s a secret. They need to be retaught
whatever they learned the year before because
it takes longer to learn and be proficient in cursive. So, for those parents that
are at home watching me, and you know that Johnny and Mary, at the end of the year went
through cursive writing, the best, best, best thing
you could do for them is have them use it over the summer. Whatever they learned, have
them write short words. And use it. That’s the best chance for
them to be proficient with it when they go in the next school year. Hope that helps. You have any specific questions
on cursive or handwriting, you can find me at Miami
