Beginning Western Calligraphy Tips : Western Calligraphy: The Northern Gothic Art

Now take a peek at the cover of this beautiful
book all about Books of Hours. Books of Hours were little, usually little books like pocket
books; like books that a person might carry around with them and at different hours during
the day when it was time to pray then they would open up this book. And if the patron
were wealthy enough then the scribes could go ahead and spend lots and lots of time doing
these beautiful things, and this is just one page and this is an enlarged page. So I want
you to take a look at this because you see how much of the page had given over at this
point. This is like; I don’t know 13-1400’s. And how much of the page has given over to
the art that goes along. This is all the wording that there is; notice the elaboration of design
and the combinations of designs. This same type of thing happens in other traditions,
it happens in the Persian for example. You see some beautiful Persian illuminated manuscripts
where there’s overlapping designs. It’s all to not only communicate on the verbal level
but is also to communicate on, on the emotional level. And so we have the word illumination
which means luminate to bring light into the eyes and light into the mind. Illumination.
